Last Friday the 10th September was the date for our Captain Tom O Neill’s Captains Trophy golf outing.
It was a beautiful sunny cloudless morning when 59 members of SICG took to our beautiful course in Silves to play for the honour of winning the Trophy.
Although it was an early start, the first fourball was off at 07.57, however, fortified by swigs of Irish Jameson whiskey or calmed by sips of Baileys Cream and armed with Captain Toms goody bags, each group of four stood on the 1st tee box at the allotted time to get their photograph taken in front of the SICG banners and then each player in turn stood between the markers to drive their ball down the fairways to the squeals of delight and a chorus of good natured banter from their companions.
During the course of the day Captain Tom drove around the course meeting with the various groupings chatting and encouraging and plying them with his bottles of beer.
There was great competition among the players and it was all done in true golfing spirit.
There were challenges for nearest the pin, however Don Simpson pipped Julian with his shot on the 15th to win the men’s nearest the pin and Agneta Torgardh pipped Jane.
Later that afternoon at the clubhouse there was some great excitement as score cards were being tallied, checked and signed for, hopes were raised and dashed as the clear winners for the day were announced.
Robert Haller was the winner of the Captains Cup.
The following evening the players and guests made their way to Brasserie Rosal in Carvoiero for the Captains Dinner and the presentation of prizes.
President Tom Callan welcomed everyone to the dinner
With good food good, good chat, good music and great comraderie, Captain Tom and President Tom presented the prizes to the winners.
A great days golf and a great night out was had by all.
